DUETS OF DIFFERENCE
‘Duets of Difference’ is a dance-theatre performance that embodies how we find unity and equity despite conflict and difference. By pairing the University Settlement/Lower East Side community members in duos alongside professional dancers, the performance explores how people persist, challenge and grow in relation to one another. This project is a response to the current political climate. By purposefully designing a long-term project, Creative Traffic Flow (CTF) resisted societal impulse to jump to polarization and instead, gave space to practice empathetic listening.
'Duets’ is also a culmination of engaged in a seven-month long workshop series. The workshops brought two strangers, unlike each other in age, identity, faith and culture, who may not get to connect in real life, together to foster a deeper understanding of themselves and each other. It premiered at Speyer Hall as a part of Performance Project at University Settlement’s 2018-19 season and also was presented at Culture Project’s 2018 Women Center Stage Festival.
Conceived, directed and produced by Creative Traffic Flow. Performed by William Leung, Mimi Webster, Rebecca You, Deborah Lee, Stevie Wu, Nancy Shan, Gladys Solano and Elijah Rasheed. Musician/Composer: Yako Prodis. Dancers: Diana Takagi and Allyn Wong.
